Gender and Web Conferences

February 23, 2007

The state of gender diversity at web conferences, courtesy of Kottke. The only conference with more than one-third female presenters is the BlogHer Business 2007 event despite an excellent list of female speaker candidates that was published in October of last year. (On a related and important note, BlogHer has 100% female speakers, which I find equally offensive to those with 100% male speakers.)

Getting Inside MySpace

January 17, 2007

Looking at MySpace’s underlying technologies, it becomes clear that neither their egregious error rates — often coming in at 20% or higher for certain times or geographical areas — nor their poor infrastructure and design demonstrate a lack of effort. “For example, the seventh 1 million-account database MySpace brought online wound up being filled in just seven days.”

January 10, 2007

Will iPhone revolutionize the mobile web market? From Cameron’s assessment: “…While the iPhone won’t revolutionize the mobile industry as a whole anytime soon, it will revolutionize the individual mobile web experience.”

Plasma is a girl’s best friend?

August 11, 2006

ArsTechnica reports on women’s affinity for technology. I do find their statistics on technology use a little confusing, however; if men are using technology for 17 hours a day, either the researcher’s definition of “technology” is pretty loose or men only have seven hours a day for sleeping, eating, showering and other non-technical tasks.

Escape from W3C

July 19, 2006

Talented individuals are leaving the W3C in droves. From the most recent renegade: “Think about this for a bit. Masayasu Ishikawa, W3C HTML Activity Lead, expert on the matter, stands in front of the group chartered to take care of the HTML and XHTML specifications, discussing what is supposed to replace both HTML and XHTML as we know it, stating repeatedly what is trivially obvious to anyone who understands a bit about the matter, and the group just goes ‘Lalalala… We do not listen to this! Lalalalala…’”
